The 52 Project: a portrait of my children, once a week, every week in 2014

Linking up with Practicing Simplicity

It's the end of our holiday and back to reality for us this week. But 21/52 sneaks in a couple more holiday photos.

Proof that this little guy does sleep sometimes! He looks so peaceful.

Mimsy hard at work making her Malaysian Batik painting. You can see more photos here.

Malaysian Batik Painting

While on holidays Mimsy and I tried our hand at Malaysian Batik painting.
Mimsy loves doing watercolour painting at home, so it wasn't too difficult to explain how to do it.

We picked our pre drawn designs - flowers for me and an orang utan for Mim. She also wanted to paint a turtle for Juju. Knowing that she would finish hers much quicker than I would, I was all for the idea!

The lovely ladies in the shop explained to us that we needed to paint the cloth with water first, and then use the inks to colour in the various sections of the drawings. The drawings had been made using hot wax, which resists the ink.

We worked hard under the watchful eye of Juju. We were provided with completed examples of the same drawings to guide us and give some inspiration. I used mine as a guide and experimented with similar but different colours. Mim took a more creative approach.

I was pretty impressed with our finished paintings! Not bad for a first effort. I was thinking I might turn Mimsy's into some library bags.

I can see us doing similar paintings in the future - lots of fun, easy clean up and room for plenty of toddler creativity.

Ok, so my photos this week aren't technically great, but the location was incredible and the experience beautiful. My photography skills weren't quite up to the challenge of humid and steamy conditions and I don't have my editing software with me, so be forgiving!

It's Mother's Day in Australia and we have had a wonderful day playing with Mimsy and JuJu at my parents house. Mother's Day's for us has become Mother's and Nanny's Day.

So much joy playing in the beautiful Autumn leaves.

JuJu Man loves being outside, and loves being with his Nanny.

Happy Mother's Day to all, especially those who love their mums and children from afar.

The 52 Project: A portrait of my children, once a week, each week in 2014.

This week I wanted to take photographs of my children doing things that they enjoy most: playing!

Big smiles from Mimsy while she bounces on her bouncy giraffe.

Love this little guy's face, intently watching his sister dance around the backyard. 6 months old today!

Now that the weather is turning a little gloomy I'll be going back over the notes from the Capturing Childhood photography course I enrolled in. I found this week much more difficult without the gorgeous sunlight from the beginning of the year. My quest to understand lighting and capture shaper images shall continue next week.

In exciting news, I entered this photograph from 6/52 into the Baker Institute Better Heath Photography Competition and won a prize! I won 10th prize, which I've just been informed is 7 pairs of socks from Bonds. This gave me a good giggle, but truth be told, it's nice to have some positive feedback on my photos.

Sewing challenge - I Heart Bowling

I'm so excited to be joining my business partner, Jane, and new friend Emily in a crafty challenge making the 'I Heart Bowling' pattern by Birdiful Stitches.

You can read all about the challenge on the Lil Pip blog.

I've already decided to up cycle some old shirts for my bowling set! I have a whole bucket full of old clothes to be refashioned into new things. I'm guessing I might need to play around with interfacing to give it all a bit of strength. But I think these stripes will be very cute.

If you love to sew please join in. Jane has set up a link up party so we can all get our sewjo going and encourage each other along the way. There will be new challenges each month and we're always open to suggestions.

Progress and finished product photos to come!
